Welcome to Toronto Shotokan Karate Seiku-kai
What is our Karate?
Our philosophy is self-discipline, endeavor, respect. Practice what you preach. With consistent, sensible training you should be able to maintain the high level of fitness and attain the matured, refined skills at even the age of 60~70. Many karate clubs have " figurehead masters" who are more involved in administration than daily personal training. There are a handful true masters who can demonstrate the result of years of training with their actions not only with talking.
You will notice the details and precision in Shihan Takahashi's instructions and performances.
3elements of our training are Kihon (basics), Kata and Kumite (sparring). Kihon is not for immediate practical use, but to develop the solid techniques with power, speed and accuracy. Kihon is a base for Kata and Kumite. Kata is the most artistic part of 3elements and it must be performed with proper speed , good flow, power and grace. Kihon must be adjusted for realistic, practical use in Kumite.
Good control is an important part of the skills and it is taught with emphasis for the safety.
Power with speed is our karate, power is generated from Tanden (centre of the body) coordinated with different parts of the body. All techniques are executed with proper body mechanism for power, speed and balance.
Muscle control when to relax or tense, which is controlled by the mind is an important, but very difficult skill to achieve. Shaky or over excited mind is likely to lead to energy wasting movement. Calm yet ready to execute an explosive technique at the right moment is the ideal state of mind.
Knowledge and perception levels must be raised to improve the skills. Knowledge is a source for judgement, but if your perception is not good enough to see it in the action, it is hard to raise your skill level.
Karate training is a very good physical, mental education for any age. You can train with the right intensity level according to your age and physical conditions
